Van Gogh e Il Viaggio di Gauguin – Genoa, Liguria

Van Gogh e Il Viaggio di Gauguin – Genoa, Liguria

When:  10 November 2011 to 15 April 2012.

This blockbuster exhibition, ‘Van Gogh and Gauguin’s Journey’ showcases 80 masterpieces of 19th and 20th century European and American paintings loaned from museums worldwide. Inspired by journeys both physical and mental, the exhibition charts explorations and interior spiritual discoveries. Gauguin’s celebrated painting Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?(1897), on loan from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is on display here — only the second time in Europe, after Paris around ten years ago. Van Gogh fuses both journeys in his paintings, 35 of which are exhibited, depicting the gloominess of Dutch interiors to the almost unbearable brightness of the southern sun. In his self images more than any other subject Van Gogh sought to portray both an interior world and an exterior world. His masterpieces on display incude Self-Portrait as an Artist,(1888) and Wheat stack under a cloudy sky, painted only three weeks before his death — and exhibited to the public for the first time in over 40 years. Other masterpieces by great artists from Hopper to Kandinsky all reflect the theme of life’s great journey.
