Regional Information

Rich in art and history, the Veneto is the Tuscany of the North. The Venetian Republic was one of the most powerful in the world, trading with the East. Venice's San Marco basilica with its golden mosaic inlaid façade recalls the “Arabian Nights” splendour of the Byzantine Empire. The countryside here is littered with summer palaces of the ruling Doges such as the Villa Pisani and the Villa Foscari that line the Brenta Canal.
The principal architect of these pleasure palaces was Palladio, who also designed many of the civic buildings in his home town, Vicenza, a UNESCO heritage site. Aside from Venice and Vicenza, art lovers will also want to visit Padua - renowned for its Giotto frescoed Cappella degli Scrovegni – and romantic Verona, immortalised as a city for lovers by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Its most famous landmark, the Roman amphitheatre is today a popular concert venue.
It would be easy just to hurry through the Veneto visiting its art treasures but there's some stunning scenery besides. To the North are the Bellunesi and Ampezzo Dolomites offering great summer hiking; and skiing in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Head West, you reach beautiful Lake Garda, Italy's largest Alpine lake.
Inland, are the Euganean and Berici Hills - a network of gentle vine terraced hills studded with cherry orchards. Great countryside for gentle bike rides and lazy days wine tasting. To really unwind, there's the Venetian lagoon. The sandy beaches at Caorle, Chioggio and Lido di Venezia are great to relax on after all that sightsteeing!
