Regional Information

Italy's only landlocked region, Umbria is Italy's Green Heart. Perched on the Central Apennines, it's a landscape of holm oak forests, flower filled mountain pastures and mountain streams.
Made up of plucky, ancient hilltop towns cut off from their neighbours by mountain passes. Each still jealously guards its own cuisine and local festivals. From altar candle racing Gubbio to medieval jousting in Foligno!
But there are gracious cities too alongside these sleepy mountain villages. Perugia is a thriving university town that boasts an internationally acclaimed annual Jazz festival. Then there's Assisi, an UNESCO World Heritage site, whose paved streets are trodden daily by pilgrims to admire the famous Basilica of San Francesco where the Franciscan order was born. Another important centre is Orvieto, famous for its striking mosaic laden Gothic cathedral and Etruscan passageways.
And for those fearful of missing the sea during their stay here, Lake Trasimeno (Italy's largest non Alpine lake), provides some compensation. A fresh fish dinner in the medieval pastel coloured town of Castiglione del Lago stops you missing the Mediterranean!
It's sometimes unfairly said that Umbria comes from the Italian word “ombra” meaning shadow. And that neighbouring Tuscany puts the region in the shade. Umbria's bounty may be subtler than Tuscany. But the pleasure lies in finding hidden gems far from the tourist crowds, like the beautiful Roman springs at Campello sul Clitunno or the Perugino frescoes at Citta' di Castello and enjoying the sleepier pace of life.
