Regional Information

With classic landscapes, wonderful art cities and world famous wines Tuscany is storybook Italy. Think geranium-decked stone farmhouses crowning burnt orange hillsides and dusty country roads meandering through cypress trees. Nowhere is this scenery more picture perfect than in Chianti where vine terraces rise up to meet pastel hilltop towns. Unsurprisingly, the region's beauty has captivated artists for centuries.
The birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is an open air museum showcasing the most famous works of Leonardo, Michelangelo and Botticello. Siena's cathedral is masterpiece of medieval architecture. But there's more to Tuscany than marble statues and Botticelli landscapes.
To the north of the region lies the lush, oak clad plunging valleys of the Mugello. In the sunflower filled meadows you'll find opulent country villas once owned by the Medici, the Renaissance family that once ruled Florence. Heading west, where the Apennines meet the Apuan Alps is Tuscany's real Alpine resort, a walker's paradise – the Garfagnana – home to the region's highest peak Monte Prado (2054m).
For those who prefer a more relaxing break, the Tuscan Riviera and its resorts of Fonte dei Marmi and Viareggio is ideal. Real beach lovers will love the island of Elba that with its beautiful white sand beaches. For an off the beaten track adventure try the Maremma. Bordering Lazio this province was the home of the ancient Etruscans. You'll find russet coloured villages like Pitigliano built seamlessly into the rock above dizzy gorges and turquoise-coloured thermal rock pools.
