Study Tours
Let Italy bring out the secret student in you. It might be a love of the language, art history, architecture, opera, dance, wine, or contemporary design. Whatever your passion, indulge it in style. Whether it’s cookery or volcanology, Italy will match your passion.
Italy has the course for you - whether you’re planning a Gap Year, becoming a ‘Grown Up Gapper’ or just in search of ‘me time.’ Appealing study holidays combine relaxation with learning. History of Art and Italian have been an elite combination since the Grand Tour. But you could also do an art cruise, with the course a moveable feast, led by an art historian.
Ciao bella! Italy is a heavenly place in which to learn the language. Outside the major cities, people are sociable, chatty and encouraging, allowing for ample interaction with the locals over an espresso or three. (Rule one: remember, no cappuccino after 10am on pain of death).
In terms of location, choose an area that matches your interests and aspirations. Bear in mind that the less touristy the place, the more you’ll learn. This has to be weighed up against the seductive cultural distractions of a major city. A medium-sized town, such as Siena, Bologna or Perugia, is a perfect compromise. Tuscany is a perennial favourite as it is supposed to be the ‘purest Italian’, even if this is something of a misnomer. (Listen to the heavy aspiration of the Tuscan ‘c’ - it sounds distinctly Spanish).
The favourite locations, but not necessarily the right ones for you, tend to be Florence and Rome, as well as Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, and Emilia Romagna in general. There is a trend for young students to choose beach resorts or islands (including Elba) and for culture-vultures to devour underrated cities, such as Genoa and Bologna.
Music and art: high culture could include a Bernini and Borromini tour of Rome or a Palladian tour of the Veneto villas around Vicenza and Treviso. Or what about the art history of Venice or Italian modern art? Musically, study tours visit the celebrated Arena di Verona opera festival and the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago, near Lucca.
Recipe for life: engaging food and wine courses include foodie itineraries with a cookery course component. One tour of Southern Italy travels from the Amalfi Coast to Calabria, Puglia and Sicily and samples 'agriturismo' (rural farm stays) and a seasonal foodie experience. Pick, collect, fish or harvest the food before learning how to cook genuine regional dishes. At best, you master the art of bread, pizza or pasta-making. At worst, reap your reward by devouring your own dishes, matched by superb local wines.
Let Love Italy match your passion: All our specialist operators need is information to make you a proposal without commitment. Our companies provide a variety of breaks designed to celebrate all things Italian: towns, landscape, art, food, and wine, and the Italian way of life. Courses could last from a weekend break to a long residential language course.
