Regional Information

Where Europe meets Africa, Sicily has an on the brink feeling. Triangular in shape, each corner strikingly contrasts with its neighbour.
The East was the Ancient Greeks' stamping ground. The coastline is scattered with relics from ancient Siracusa, Agrigento and Taormina. The West belonged to the Arabs. Palermo's conca d'oro (ring of citrus groves) were an Arabian import. Many of the low walled, whitewashed houses here would not look out of place in a North African village. The Spanish owned the south. Ragusa, Noto and Ispica were all rebuilt according to the Spanish Baroque design. Today their cathedrals could grace any Andalucian square.
But there's much more to Sicily than antiquities. Sicily is a land of volcanoes. From mighty Mt Etna, towering at over 3000m to conical Stromboli and its nightly firework display to Vulcano's huge silvery-green crater. Nature lovers will also enjoy the wealth of flora and fauna from prickly pears to dwarf palms to flamingos, egrets and herons. There's as much bounty under the sea. Sicily's outer islands Ustica and Marettimo offer diving sites to rival the Indian Ocean where you can spot corals, rainbow fish and starfish.
But do make time simply to relax and enjoy a granita (crushed lemon drink) and a siesta on the beach. From Favignana white sand coves to Taormina's black sand beaches there's one for every taste. And to end the day, what better than fresh swordfish followed by one of the island's famous sticky ricotta dessert, cassata – heaven!
