Think of Sardinia and you're likely to conjure up millionaires' yachts and turquoise lagoons fringed with white sand beaches.
This Mediterranean island is an Italian byword for beach chic. But beyond the glamour, lies a wild interior of pink granite topped mountain ranges, plunging limestone valleys carpeted with Spanish broom and twisted cork trees littered with nuraghi, mysterious conical, prehistoric burial grounds that were laboriously hewn from the limestone rock by the island's prehistoric settlers. This wild untamed, Mediterranean landscape is perfect for hiking and extreme mountain biking.
But for most, it is Sardinia's white sand beaches, azure seas and coral lined sea grottoes that draws them back time and again. Unsurprisingly there are some great diving spots. At Villiasmus, divers can spot turtles and dolphins as well as sunken Roman galleys.
For those who prefer their nautical adventures above the surface, there are plenty of boat trips to outer islands. Like Sant'Antioco with its limestone coves fringed with dwarf palms and Phoenician excavations. And the Maddalena archipelago of seven islands are characterised by the pink granite massifs that they are made up of ranging from dark ochre to bright pink. The island of Budelli even has a light pink sand beach.
For culture lovers, there's the ancient Phoenician-Roman city at Tharros, and the twisting paved alleyways of medieval Alghero to discover. But Sardinia will always be the beach lovers' dream destination.
