Regional Information

Tucked in Italy's North West corner bordering France and Switzerland is Piedmont. The name means foot in the mountains and this region is certainly more Alpine than Italian.
Fondue is on the menu, and the local dialect that's still spoken today in many of the geranium-decked Alpine chalet style villages sounds more French than Italian. Unsurprisingly, with the Alps on the doorsteps some of Italy's best skiing is here in resorts like Sauze d'Oulx, Bardonecchia and Sestriere. In summer walkers can explore the Gran Paradiso – Italy's first ever national park - and home to ibex, golden eagle, and many rare Alpine blooms.
The regional capital, Turin, continues this “Middle European” flavour. Its genteel arcaded streets and Art Nouveau cafes are more reminiscent of Vienna or Prague than an Italian city. With the best Egyptian museum outside Cairo and the mysterious Turin shroud there's more than enough for a day trip.
After Turin and the Alps, most visitors head to Lake Maggiore, a natural border with Switzerland. In Piedmont's “bit” is gracious Stresa renowned for its elegant turn of the century villas and formal gardens and a great base from which to explore the beautiful Borromean islands.
Few visitors venture south of Turin, which is a shame as the Langhe Hills provide an “Italian” feel. Nestling amongst undulating vines and hazelnut woods are the wine towns of Barolo, Asti and Alba. Aside from great wine tasting, there are truffles and famous cheeses like gorgonzola. Northern Italy's answer to Tuscany – it shouldn't be missed!
