Regional Information

Squashed between the French and Italian Alps, Liguria is a land of contrasts. Alpine vistas, mountain villages, dizzying vine terraces dropping into the sea and beautiful pastel coloured fishing ports.
Sheltered by the Alps, the region is naturally lush; and the mouth-watering local cuisine benefits from the freshest of local produce and the best of French and Italian traditions. Where Italy meets the Cote d'Azur, the elegant beach resorts here have more than a touch of French chic.
From San Remo with its Belle Epoque hotels and casino, to Bordighera with its immaculately raked sand beaches bars to Portofino whose pastel coloured fishermen's cottage were first adopted as an Italian St Tropez by Richard Burton and Liz Taylor.
The region's capital, bustling Genoa provides a gritty contrast. Once Europe's most powerful Maritime Republic, today its impressive Ducal Palace and string of museums make an interesting day trip here before following the coastline south to Liguria's most famous landmark – the Cinque Terre. Named the Five Lands after the five villages that nestle in lush creases of these vine-terraced cliffs that drop abruptly into the sea, there are panoramic coastal hikes and boat trips to unspoilt beaches.
A protected marine reserve, divers can spot rare corals and turtles. Also not to be missed it the Gulf of Poets (named after Byron and Shelly who sojourned here). Byron's former home town, Portovenere, is a charming tangle of pastel coloured houses offering stunning views along the coast from its Genoese fortress.
