Regional Information

For most, Lazio is Rome. The Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Vatican City not to mention Ostia Antica (the remains of ancient Rome's port) and Tivoli, the site of Emperor Hadrian's luxurious 1C AD villa – there's almost too much to see. So it's understandable Lazio (wrongly) is often overlooked.
North of Rome is a land of walnut groves and rolling meadows. The ancestral home of the Etruscans, there are ancient Etruscan passageways (tunnels carved through the tufa rock) and cave paintings to admire in necropoli (graves) in Tarquinia, Vulci and Cerveteri. Then there's Viterbo, seat of the popes in the 13 and 14C. Today a “mini Rome” of opulent fountains and Romanesque churches. Nearby, there are many sumptuous villas once owned by Papal families such as Villa Lante at Bagnaia; and beautiful lakes Bolsena and Bracciano.
South of Rome are the vine-terraced slopes of the castelli romani, the 13 towns that perch amongst the Albano Hills. The most famous among these are Frascati, famed for its wine, and Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence. Also, south of the city, is Lazio's prettiest stretch of coastline and the charming whitewashed fishing village of Sperlonga. Just off the coast lies Ponza, a verdant, craggy island characterised by azure grottoes and limestone cliffs.
Although most tourists rush through Lazio, they would do better to spend at least a few days exploring here. With world famous wines, beautiful lakes, Etruscan remains and Renaissance villas, they would be pleasantly surprised.
