Regional Information

For most Campania is the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Azure coves, vertical pastel towns, subtropical cliff top gardens and dizzying terraces of lemon groves that seem to fall into the sea - few landscapes on earth as are bewitchingly beautiful.
Campania's shores have always captivated the rich and famous from Wagner to Nureyev. In the 19C Sorrento, Positano and Ravello and the neighbouring island of Capri were fashionable stops on the Grand Tour.
With its chaotic traffic and crowded washing line decked alleyways, Naples itself is the antidote to all this glamour. But its 17C Spanish palace and colourful Mergellina harbour in shadow of brooding Vesuvius make up for it. The more adventurous may even fancy a trip up mighty Mt Vesuvius (careful though, it's still active!) for incomparable views over the Bay.
For historians, Campania boasts one of the world's most important archaeological treasures - Pompeii. Then there's the similarly well preserved Herculaneum, and Paestum, whose Greek temples rival the Acropolis in Athens in splendour.
You'd imagine that such a well-loved destination would be impossibly crowded. But you can get off the beaten track quickly. Just outside Sorrento is the Massa Lubrense peninsula - a network of tiny villages and harbours linked by ancient pathways through citrus and olive groves.
Further south lies the Cilento National Park where golden eagles and black woodpeckers soar above Aleppo pines and hilltop villages cling to limestone gorges. For world class sightseeing and beautiful landscapes, Campania is hard to beat.
