Regional Information

In Italy's instep bordering both the Ionian and Mediterranean Sea, Basilicata is one of the country's least explored regions. The Mediterranean coastline is delightfully unspoiled corniche of vine-covered cliffs, azure coves and pastel coloured towns like Maratea and Sapri.
The Ionian coast was the site of Magna Graecia (the Greeks were the first settlers here) There are important archaeological remains at Metaponto and Policoro. Here, the landscape is softer. Fields of citrus groves and cherry orchards border white sand beaches where sea turtles come to breed in the clear waters every year. Nowadays both Metaponto and Policoro are established beach resorts, but there are also smaller fishing villages like Nova Siri and Rotondella to explore.
Inland lies the Pollino National Park, noted for its unusual geology where pillow lava rocks and limestone boulders lie side by side. Home to over 1500 different floral species – the rarest of which is the Loricate pine – hikers can also spot porcupines and falcons. Just south of here, is the Murgia – a stark landscape of white clay hills and twisted limestone ravines – where you'll find Matera now recognised by UNESCO for its many medieval churches carved out of the crag that the town perches on.
It has only been in the last few decades that foreign travellers have begun to explore this forgotten province. Those that have visited have not been disappointed. For Basilicata in its subtle way can show us Southern Italy at its best.
