Regional Information

The Val d'Aosta occupies the northwest corner of Italy and shares borders with Switzerland to the north and France to the west. The region, which is Italy's smallest and least populated contains some of Europe's tallest mountains and a vast national parks. It was in this rugged landscape that modern mountaineering developed.
The cuisine of the Val d'Aosta has been influenced by the close proximity of both France and the Piedmonte, yet retains its own unique character. It is the only Italian region to produce Fontina cheese and is a favorite ingredient in many dishes including the local specialties like Fonduta (fondue) and Costoletta alla Valdostana - a veal chop covered in Fontina.
The region is like an island among the mountains, and, over the centuries, this has conditioned its history, language, and administrative and political life and encouraged the development of an original collective identity.
Numerous glaciers feed a rich web of streams, which at the bottom of the respective valleys flow in the basin of the Dora Baltea. The distinctly Alpine character of this region can be seen in the pine forests, up to rather high altitudes, where they give place to large pasturelands. The small Alpine lakes, little jewels set in majestic mountain landscapes, are numerous.
The Valle d'Aosta symbolizes nature, the highest and most imposing peaks of Europe, idyllic landscapes, lakes, woodlands, enchanting valleys, the alpine flora and fauna, natural and unspoilt reserves.
