Regional Information
The beautiful region of Abruzzo, which is located in central Italy, is one of the least populated of all the Italian regions, but it is definitely one of the best-kept secrets in Italy.
Surrounded by the Lazio region to the west, the Marche region, the Molise region and the Adriatic Sea to the east, parts of Abruzzo are covered in endless areas of forest.
Abruzzo, which is often referred to as the green region of Europe mainly because of its National Parks, consists of many mountains and hills including the Apennine mountain range.
The town is characterized by its Romanesque architecture, as is much of the Abruzzo region. As a university town founded in 1458, L' Aquila is a lively and dynamic place that often hosts jazz concerts and theatrical performances.
Romantic mountain villages are found throughout the province. As a typical medieval settlement, a tall, cylindrical fortress stands proud surrounded by lower buildings and encircled by sturdy walls. Within these walls sits a maze of narrow winding streets, walkways, alleys and elaborate buildings.
